Chapter 7 Summary
A short time later, Scarpetta pays out of her personal accounts for her and Marino to fly to North Carolina in order to meet with Hilda Ozimek. On the way, Scarpetta asks Marino about the cards and learns that he knew nothing of them either. Once at Ms. Ozimek's, the first thing Marino does when they arrive is to test Ms. Ozimek by giving her a photo from his wallet and ask if she can tell if the person pictured is dead or alive. Ms. Ozimek immediately says that the woman is alive and then goes on to tell Marino how the woman is caught in a cycle of guilt, one minute feeling very guilty, the next feeling as though nothing matters. Marino becomes disturbed by Ms. Ozimek's reading and snatches the photo back.
Marino then presents Ms. Ozimek with several other pictures...
