Chapter 4 Summary

Abby wants to interview the convenience store clerk that served Deborah and Fred the night they disappeared. Scarpetta goes with her, concerned about Abby traveling in this area in the dark by herself. Once there, Abby asks the clerk a list of questions, getting the same story Wesley told Scarpetta. However, Abby also learns that a man was in the store at the same time as Deborah and Fred and that he most likely overheard the clerk sending the young couple to the rest stop. The clerk says that the man left then, but Deborah and Fred stayed behind to attempt to buy some beer. The clerk carded Deborah, refused to sell the alcohol, and sent them on their way a short time later with a six pack of sodas.
