Chapter 2 Summary
The dogs find nothing but a trail that leads to the rest stop across the highway and ends there. Nothing is found in the car, either. Now all the investigators can do is wait for the bodies to turn up, just as the bodies of the other couples eventually did. The next day, Scarpetta is summoned to Mrs. Harvey's home. Mrs. Harvey is aware of the previous couple murder cases and wants to know if Scarpetta feels that her daughter and Fred Cheney are victims of this serial killer. All four couples were alone on their way to a destination at which they never arrived. All four vehicles were found abandoned somewhere along the route, suggesting they picked up their killer for some unexplained reason before being overtaken.
