Salvation

Salvation is symbolic of escape. After her first night at the bar, the narrator comes to regard the establishment as a retreat from her otherwise entrapping circumstances. She often visits Salvation when she wants to ignore her emotions or avoid relationship conflicts.

Pills

The pills to which the narrator becomes addicted are symbolic of avoidance. The narrator becomes addicted to Ativan and Oxy in particular after Debbie disappears. The pills help the narrator to detach from her memories, her guilt, her fear, and her confusion.

Knife

The knife the narrator buys at the pawn shop is symbolic of power. Unable to control her life in any other regard, the narrator feels more confident and in control when she is carrying this implement. She ultimately wields it against her sister, a violent act which underscores her longing for autonomy over her life.
