Summary
In Chapter 32, the narrator did not remember her trip home. She slept for hours, woke in the middle of the night, and walked to Sasha’s. Passing familiar sights reminded her of the past. At Sasha’s, she checked on Apples and slept.
The narrator went to work. She imagined everything that could have happened to Debbie, who had “been gone for over two years” (233). Recalling the last time they had seen each other, she “regretted not calling Debbie after the hospital” (234). She had “no evidence Debbie was alive” (234).
In Chapter 33, the woman with Shoah grief returned to the emergency room. Everything she said reminded the narrator of Baba Rita. The narrator considered sharing her story, but resisted.
In Chapter 34, realizing that not “looking for Debbie wasn’t going to” free her, the narrator called the PI, Mark (238).
