Even in this familiar sphere, she feels incapable of expressing and inhabiting her real identity. Jordi is her proverbial safe space, because with Jordi she does not feel ashamed of herself. Jordi's character is thus a device used to convey the narrator's more vulnerable character traits on the page. This moment also establishes the narrator's conflict with her home environment.
