Summary
In Part 1, Chapter 7, the narrator stays in the new room for the next two days. She texts Harris saying she got to New York, but misses the drive (61). She wakes up one morning to the Memorial Day parade passing by. Harris texts “Happy May 31,” because it is “Sam’s due date” (62). Seven years prior, the narrator heard a voice telling her it was time to go to the hospital. During labor, the doctors informed her she had experienced fetal-maternal hemorrhage and Sam might not live (63). Women who had FMH birthed stillborn babies. She and Harris had desperate sex over the following weeks as they waited to see if Sam would survive. This closeness “didn’t last” (64).
