Summary

In Part 1, Chapter 1, the narrator’s neighbor Brian writes her a note informing her that he saw someone taking photos of her house and he got the make, model, and license plate number of their car (3). Brian works for the FBI and offers to help her identify the photographer. She and her husband Harris discuss the issue. They “are more formal” in their relationship than the narrator is with her friends, particularly her best friend Jordi (4).

The narrator calls Brian about the issue from her office in the garage. The conversation shifts into silence, making the narrator well up. That evening, Brian texts the license plate number and a description of the photographer. He suggests he call a retired detective named Tim Yoon about the issue, too. That night, the narrator masturbates to the image of the photographer outside her house.
