bell hooks
Gloria Jean Watkins, better known by her pen name "bell hooks," is the author of All About Love. She is a well-known writer, activist, teacher, and feminist scholar. As the essays in this book focus primarily on topical subjects, hooks does not include very much detail about herself and her life. From what is included, readers learn that she was raised in a household that was dysfunctional and at times abusive but that she did not lack affection or care. This resulted in confused childhood messages about the nature of love and meant that hooks spent much of her early years feeling unloved. As such, she herself is an example of a person who was not educated in the ways of love, had to unlearn negative messages, and needed to heal childhood wounds in order to give and receive love fully.
