Photography

Photography in the novel symbolizes connection to the world and to one’s family. Pierre, Margot, and Michael are all characters who engage in the activity of photography. Thus, even before Michael learns about Pierre and Margot, he already has this connection to them as he takes pictures for fun and for social media. Moreover, each of these characters use photography as a way of connecting to, and even influencing, the world around them.

Genealogy

Genealogy and family connections symbolize the inherent significances of familial relationships. While the novel does not dismiss the idea that family relationships can be toxic or unstable, it also acknowledges the value of attempting to nurture healthy family relationships. Noah and Michael form a lasting bond on the basis of their familial relationship, and Michael even takes an interest in the lives of relatives who died before he was born.
