Interior Versus Exteriors

Appearances versus realities are only one of the many forms in which this theme appears in "Being Nikki." However, the theme is by far the most important in the series, as the girl on the "inside" - Em - is not the same as the girl on the "outside," Nikki. Moreover, when the real Nikki was still in her first body, she had a nasty personality. She was self-centered and narcissistic, which did not at all match the beauty of her outer form. This coincides with the Stark Corporation, which appears to provide useful products in beautiful packages, but actually manufactures cheaply-made products using unethical business practices. Part of the book's narrative is to reconcile appearances with realities, as the "good" Em gets to be in the beautiful body, while Nikki is now in a dowdy form more consistent with her unappealing personality.
