Chapters 141 - 150 Summary

Frannie and David arrive. On the second evening, the judge has a grand dinner, which many people attend. They tell Isaac Starbuck of the need for a lighthouse keeper in Sankaty and urge him to take the position. The next evening they attend a meeting presenting speeches by former slaves. The speakers are Frederick Douglas and William Lloyd Garrison. Una's neighbor, Robben Avalon, is at the meeting. He has just returned from Europe. Back in Siasconset, Una visits her neighbor to view his sculptures.

In chapter 142, Frannie moves to the judge's house in Nantucket. She then moves to the lighthouse at Sankaty to care for Isaac's children. She becomes pregnant and has a daughter named Liberty. The child wanders into the sea as a toddler and drowns. Frannie leaves the lighthouse and moves back to the judge's house. Soon she goes...
