The Mission

The mission at Kilemba where Hamza stays prior to his exit from the schutztruppe, is symbolic of transition. Prior to his stay at the mission, Hamza is living in a version of captivity. He is forced into submission to the Oberleutnant, unable to free himself from his enslaved circumstances. The mission ultimately grants him an avenue out of one life and into the next.

Storeroom

The storeroom where Hamza resides on Khalifa's property is symbolic of peace. For the majority of his life, Hamza has been indebted to others. While living in the storeroom, however, Hamza experiences a new sense of stability and security. The storeroom, although owned by Khalifa, is the first space Hamza has had that is his own. It grants him a momentary reprieve from his deeper sorrows and longings.
