Asha and Khalifa's House
Asha and Khalifa's house is one of the narrative's primary settings. It is located in the East African town in which the majority of the narrative takes place. When Asha and Khalifa first get married, Asha's uncle assures her that he has left her the property in his will. After the old merchant dies, the couple discovers he has left Asha nothing. The house then passes to the merchant's son, Nassor.
Although Nassor owns the house and property, Asha and Khalifa continue to reside here. The location becomes a refuge and a resting place for many characters. The couple, per Khalifa's urging, takes in Ilyas, Afiya, and Hamza. After Ilyas leaves for the war, Khalifa collects Afiya from her abusive aunt and uncle and houses her in this location. After the war ends and Khalifa meets Hamza, he invites him to stay on the property...
