Summary
In Chapter 7, Hamza and his detachment “headed for a German mission called Kilemba” (118). Shortly after arriving, the troop met a mission worker named Pascal. Pascal explained how and why the mission had been allowed to remain open. It was run by a pastor and his wife.
Throughout the “last few weeks of the war,” Hamza and his troop “hid from the pursuing forces” (123). Those who survived the conflict were left with little. One morning, the Feldwebel confronted Oberleutnant, insisting that Hamza had betrayed their troop. He then beat Hamza violently, nearly killing him.
Hamza “was placed under” Pascal’s care (132). During his convalescence, the pastor took a liking to Hamza, as did his wife, “the Frau pastor” (136). One morning, the pastor told Hamza the war was over and Germany had surrendered (137). He invited Hamza to attend a service...
