In "Challenges," Jeffery and the other students are surprised to learn they are taking a surprise version of the standardized tests in an effort to see how they'll do on the real thing. Jeffery is given extra time to complete tests because of his difficulty focusing and so is late entering English class. A girl in the class is just reading her journal entry as Jeffery walks in. The assignment is for students to write about a time they "faced a challenge head-on." When it's Tad's turn to read, he's obviously angry about the girl's entry.
