Lost in the Mail through The Pact Summary
In "Lost in the Mail," Jeffery arrives home from school and discovers a letter from the school superintendent. He can't imagine what he might have done to already be in trouble but opens the letter to find out. It's a "boring" letter with information about "educational equity" and other "awkward phrases," but then Jeffery sees there is a requirement that all eighth grade students pass a standardized test at the end of the year. Students who don't pass will have to repeat the eighth grade. Jeffery shoves the letter into the garbage disposal and doesn't say anything about it to his parents. Jeffery's mother is a teacher but she teaches in Pennsylvania so doesn't yet know about the new New Jersey law regarding standardized tests.
