The Novel's Title, Adultery

The title of the novel represents the conflict between social pressures to do what is considered correct and achieve what is considered to define success and an individual's struggle to find self-fulfillment and happiness. In this case, it is Linda who is going through this struggle. Once she completes her journey, she ends her affair.

Switzerland

Switzerland , which is where the narrative take place, symbolizes Linda's life. It is a country that strives to be perfect, normal, and happy, but, below the surface has a dark, turbulent side. Linda is like the country in that, on the surface, she has the perfect life, but during the narrative, she lives a dark life in which she chases a married man and tries to have his wife arrested. She does all of this in the name of improving her "self" just as John Calvin's actions...
