Linda
Lind a is the narrative's protagonist and storyteller. She commits adultery when she has an affair with Jacob. Her story, though, goes beyond the narrative's title from a literal viewpoint as it is really a story of both her and her marriage finding their identity. As such, Linda's character changes over the course of the narrative. She first describes herself as being risk-adverse, she feels guilty for having more than she deserves, she feels terror, has a low self-esteem, and she both needs and wants a change. Yet, she feels conflicted because she also does not want to lose her family and all that she has worked for. This is the state she is when she reconnects with Jacob. She is depressed and beginning to feel apathetic. She is also reserved and tires to please others.
