Summary
In Chapter 37, Richard reflects on the day he confronted Adèle. He had wanted to kick her out and close the door to her, but she reminded him that Lucien’s birthday was the next weekend. He agreed to let her stay since plans had already been made, and afterwards he told her to leave. She begged and pleaded to stay, and told him that she could not live without him. He could not let her go, so he decided he would do everything to save her. He asked her for every detail of her secret life, and she had eventually given up everything to him. He had studied addiction in drug users, and suspected that Adèle would soon enter withdrawal.
