Part One, Chapters 42-43 Summary

Van feels that he has to destroy two men if he is to survive. He goes to Kalugano to see Herr Rack. On the train, he meets Condula and has tea with her. He asks her for Percy de Prey's address and she says she will see if she can find it for him. They stay in the tea car until he reaches his stop. As he is getting off the train, he is challenged to a duel by a glove slapping him in the face.

Van stays at the Majestic Hotel. He immediately begins to look for the Racks and then buys clothing and a suitcase which he has delivered to the hotel, since he left his clothing at Ardis Hall to be shipped to his father's. He is going to be in a duel and...
