Dartmouth Square
Dartmouth Square is the location of the house where Norah and her mother lived. This location figures prominently in many of the novel's most revelatory instances. In her mother's bedroom and her bathroom, Norah finds the picture of her that is turned down on her bedside table, signifying that she was in fact having affairs. As well, Norah finds condoms in her bathroom, and in this way Katherine is able to facilitate Norah's sexual behavior. It is also the location where Norah finds Father Des without his shoes on, signifying to Norah that the two had been carrying on an affair. Dartmouth Square is the scene when Katherine lashes out at Norah for having sex, as well as the scene where Katherine discovers that Niall raped Norah. In this way, Dartmouth Square is the location where all the major themes of the novel converge.
