Summary
Chapter 13 – The mood and feel of rehearsal changes as technicians and guest observers arrive. The actors sharpen their performances but are more ignored than ever as Bill pays increasing attention to the technical elements of the show. Gerald conserves his energy, aware of his fatigue and its consequences – particularly an unreliable memory. He also avoids Enzo, but cannot help responding when, during a long pause in rehearsal, Enzo flirts seductively with him. Eventually Bill calls a break, and the company disperses. Gerald arranges to meet Enzo, but is distracted by a very public tantrum thrown by the costume designer. He watches it with Ariela who, during a brief and whispered conversation about their various affairs, refers to the fact that everything will be over soon and they will be back home.
