Summary
Chapter 11 – The next morning is gray and cool, hinting at rain. Gerald, fatigued and headachy, makes his way up the hill to the palazzo for rehearsal, wondering whether he made a mistake in stopping his medication. When he gets to the palazzo, he discovers that rehearsal has not started: workmen are delivering sand that Bill had ordered. Rehearsal is delayed even more when Bill arrives and reacts angrily that the sand is the wrong color. He orders it replaced, and then calls for a run-through later that afternoon. As the company prepares, narration reveals Gerald’s awareness that Bill has had affairs with many of his so-called “straight” actors (this explains Gerald seeing Bill with Holgar), and that Ariela knows about the two of them getting together.
