Summary
Chapter 3 – When the company arrives at their accommodations, Gerald discovers that they are all being housed in a decrepit motel, and that the men are all have roommates, while the women have their own rooms. He tries to get his room changed, but cannot make himself understood. Later at lunch, undercurrents of tension move through the group of actors, eventually resulting in Ariela and Holgar leaving the table, Gerald bickering with Ian, and Timothy (now identified as autistic) fretting unhappily. Afterwards, Gerald goes into the town, narration describing how a new version of Bellina had been built after the original version had been destroyed and how Gerald is unable to buy a new alarm clock. Eventually, Gerald settles down in some unexpectedly cool shade, enjoying one of the cigarettes he had purchased at the airport.
