Saul Evans

Saul is a former minister turned lighthouse keeper on the island just outside of Southern Reach. He left the ministry because he could no longer live a lie. He is homosexual and knew that he would never be able to be happy continuing on as he had for so many years. Taking a job that would put him in a remote area away from people actually brought him into the arms of a man who loved him for who he was.

Saul befriends a little girl from the island named Gloria and in her he is able to regain some of his former appreciation for his fellow man. When two researchers come and disturb his lens, Saul begins to investigate their actions and ultimately becomes infected by something they release from one of the ancient lenses.
