The focus is back on the former director. She returns from her meeting with Lowry back to her offices at Southern Reach. When she enters her office, she sees the black and white photograph of her as a child standing with Saul and Brad. A note from Lowry tells her to proudly display it on the wall in her office as a reminder. Cynthia knows a veiled threat when she sees one, but can't bear to throw the picture away. She, instead, calls in Grace and asks her to dig as far and as deep as she can to see if there's a link between the Severances (and John Rodriguez) and Lowry.

When she sees Whitby in the halls at Southern Reach, she can tell that he's as changed as she is, though he hides it well. She senses that the light...
