Ghost Bird and Control find a rowboat pulled up past the high tide mark. They decide to use it to row to the island before dark. They reach the island and decide to try and get to the ruined lighthouse, where they would make camp for the night. They both feel as if something or someone is watching them. They reach the lighthouse and decide that they had better explore it a little further before settling in so there will be no surprises. When they turn the corner, a woman is sitting on the steps with a rifle pointed at them. The woman is Grace Stevenson, the assistant director from Southern Reach.
