This chapter is told from the point of view of the lighthouse keeper, thirty years prior. He discusses what he thinks about the type of 'light' that exists within every human being. When he left his church he'd felt like a lighthouse drained of most of its light, except for the small glimmer still in his heart. Now, living in the lighthouse, he knows that despite his isolation, that he is the message. Somehow.
The small cut on his hand from the strange plant/glass shard left by the Science and Seance people is still bothering him. He begins filling in armadillo holes when Gloria joins him. They talk and she asks if she can go to the top of the lighthouse to look over at Failure Island as it is burning. This is the first he's heard of it and drops...
