Father Schwartz's Home
The short story's narrative present is set in Father Schwartz's home. The story begins with Father Schwartz sitting alone in his house, trying to ward off the despair of the four o'clock hour. Rudolph Miller shows up shortly thereafter, relieving Father Schwartz of his torturous loneliness. When Rudolph begins recounting his sinful tale to the priest, the narrative temporarily shifts into the past. However, in the story's fifth and final section, the narrative returns to the setting. After hearing Rudolph's account, the priest is overcome with emotion. He casts off his priestly manner, and encourages Rudolph to explore the world without guilt.
The Church
