April walks New York City’s streets at almost 3 in the morning after a long day’s work. She leaves her back up metrocard on her desk and heads back to retrieve it, stumbling upon a giant metallic structure in the shape of a robot. Because she was a graphic design student and knows what it means to really appreciate an artist’s work, she stops and stares at the figure and then calls her friend, Andy, to shoot a video with her. The two introduce the robot to the camera and jokingly name him “Carl,” uploading their video to YouTube and becoming overnight celebrities. The New York Carl site is so important because 63 other Carls were placed around the world at the exact same time, and April was the one to make first contact with an alien life form at this location.
