Summary

April and Andy meet Andy’s father for a meeting with an agent named Jennifer Putnam. April tells her that her goal is for “April May to be the counterbalance to the idea of the Carls” so that she can “promote simple change and a better world” (78). Putnam listens to her pitch and warns her that power will change her life forever. Andy and April are interrogated individually, at which point Putnam and Andy’s father ask April about her sexuality. She is bisexual, but they advise that she choose to be either gay or straight while promoting herself so that her audience is less confused. Putnam declares, “Your sexual orientation will be a weakness through which you can be attacked” (82). April chooses to tell the public that she is gay.
