One of the primary themes running through the novel is relationships. The two primary relationships the novel tackles is the relationships of a family and friendships. The novel lightly touches upon romantic relationships as well.

Friendship is one of the primary types of relationships the novel tackles. Ted and Maybe become best friends as soon as Ted defends Maybe against the harassment of the Fantastic Five. Ted and Maybe are always there for each other no matter what happens in their respective lives.

Hollywood too turns out to be a good friend to both Ted and Maybe. At first, he agrees to drive them out to California with him when he goes to college. As their lives unfold and challenges face them in California, Ted continues to try to help Maybe and Ted in any way that he can.
