Chapters 35 and 36 Summary

Sammy is taking Maybe out to dinner all by themselves so he tells her to wear something nice. Maybe has picked up some new clothes from the vintage shop the sales girl at the department store told her about, but she still doesn't have anything nice enough. While she doesn't want to do it, Maybe asks Willow to borrow some of her clothes. Willow helps put together an ensemble for Maybe. While they are out to dinner, Sammy asks Maybe what she's really doing in California. Maybe tells Sammy what happened. She asks him why he married her mom twice and he tells her the stories.

Maybe recalls that when she was little, her mother entered Maybe in pageants. Maybe even won a couple. Maybe remembers her grandmother coming to see her in the pageants and one time Maybe came in...
