Chapters 1 and 2 Summary

When Maybelline, Maybe, is six years old, her mother takes her to Disneyworld for her birthday. They go on the rides, Belle, from Beauty and the Beast serves Maybe her slice of cake and sings happy birthday to her. that night as Maybe's mother tucks her in, she tells Maybe that she'll always be there for her.

By the time Maybe is 16, the relationship between her and her mother is completely different. Chessy, Maybe's mother, announces to Maybe that she is marrying again. She is marrying Jake, the manager from the Piggly Wiggle. Chessy tells Maybe that she needs a makeover and to stop being a Goth. Chessy met Jake the previous summer when she went to the grocery store to pick up Maybe's cake. Chessy returned with Jake and no cake. Maybe gives her mother the finger as she walks...
