Summary
At the beginning of Chapter 22, “Feri Kuncz in the Matula,” Gedeon Torma calls Gina to his office in order to berate her about the contraband trinkets she had gifted earlier to her friend, Piroska Torma. In the middle of Gedeon Torma’s rant, Feri appears and asks to take Gina away. However, the director resists the order, citing the binding nature of the agreement he made with the General, in which he would not hand Gina over to anyone besides her father. When Feri presses him, Gedeon Torma replies that he answers only to the clergy and Christ himself.
On the director’s name day, March 29, Mitsi Horn appears at the Matula without warning. She treats the school to treats and rounds everyone up to play games and dance. When Mitsi Horn dances with Gina, she tells her that she must escape that...
