Chapter 28 Summary

After each gives their blood, Sam sends them up the hill to help Lirael make the three diamonds of protection. As soon as the group arrives, Lirael starts shouting orders at them. They complete the three diamonds as the column of red surges toward them. Lirael places everyone, including Nick's body, inside of the diamonds. She then instructs each of the seven to take hold of a bell.

Lirael knows that the wall of fire barreling toward them is just the first of the anomalies of the Destroyer that they will have to overcome. As Lirael presents the bells to the two Clayrs, she realizes they are twins, that their spirits are intertwined, and that they can only hold one bell between the two of them. This means that they are only six and that they are missing the seventh person they need...
