Chapter 23 Summary

When Lirael and Dog reach the Fifth Gate, it is a waterclimb instead of a waterfall. They see three Dead coming at them to attack them. Lirael and Dog are able to fight off the Dead. Dog tells Lirael that he thinks it is Hedge that is following them.

Chapter 23 Analysis

Lirael and Dog continue to battle and overcome the obstacles of Death. It foreshadows that they will make it and find out some answers on how to stop the Destroyer. It also infers that Hedge is in hot pursuit of them. Hedge's goal is to stop Lirael from obtaining the answers she needs to ultimately stop the Destroyer.
