Summary
In Chapter 18, Gamache and Billy visit Billy’s ancestral home from where the letter about the bricked-up portion of the house had been forwarded.
There was a misunderstanding as Godin, the new owner of the house, believed the officers had come about the death of his wife, Patricia. The police determined she had died by suicide, but Godin believed she had been murdered. She died about five weeks prior, about the same time Billy received the letter. Gamache called Beauvoir to report he had discovered what he believed was a homicide.
Meanwhile, Gamache showed Godin the letter Billy had received as well as the Post-It note they believed Patricia had written. Godin said Patricia had never mentioned receiving or forwarding a letter.
