Summary
In Chapter 7, when Fiona’s name was called at the graduation, none of the faculty clapped for her. She was allowed to attend the ceremony only because Gamache had interceded on her behalf by getting permission from the families of the victims and permission from the university.
After the graduates were presented, Nathalie spoke about the shooting and about a woman who represented hope. This woman, Harriet, had been awarded a scholarship for graduate work in memory of the shooting victims. Backstage, Harriet panicked and thought she might pass out when her name was called. She took a deep breath and managed to step onto the stage. Nathalie put her arm around Harriet and told her in French that everything would be all right.
