Summary

The first part of this chapter recounts the experiences of those closest to Virginia in Lyon – Dr. Rousset, Germaine Guerin, Edward Zeff, and the Newton brothers. The author describes how, as a result of the actions of Robert Alesch and the determination of Klause Barbie, all were eventually arrested, tortured, and sent to internment camps. None, however, revealed everything they knew about Virginia, making both Alesch and Barbie increasingly angry and frustrated.

The author pays particular narrative attention to Guerin and the Newton brothers, the former having fallen victim to Alesch’s clever manipulations and eventually sacrificing herself so the Newton brothers could escape a Gestapo raid. The Newtons, meanwhile, evaded capture for several weeks; at one point, Alfred Newton believed that he had killed Alesch, but was shocked to realize that he had killed the wrong man. They eventually made plans...
