Summary

The next chapter is titled “Fear.” Wander continues to remember his pack, including that his mother would say “All is well … We are together” (125). Wander acts as he would if he was lead wolf for a pack, but feels pain at being alone. Full from eating the deer, he sleeps and then returns to eat some more. Wander is excited to catch the scent of another wolf, but the lights from a vehicle reveal the wolf is on the other side of the highway. Though Wander is desperate for companionship and wants to share his deer with her, he urges the wolf not to cross the highway. Wander feels he cannot bear to see another wolf die.
