Summary
The next chapter is titled “Elk.” Wander runs all night. He arrives at water the next morning without knowing if anyone else from his pack survived. That night, Wander hears a group of wolves howling, and he hears Sharp give a “low and whimpering howl” (47) at the end of their song. Wander knows this means he is with that pack now, and Sharp is no longer Wander's brother. Wander makes his way to the prairie. He catches a scent of Warm, but he cannot find him. Wander settles down to wait for any survivors, making sure to leave his scent so Warm can follow it.
Wander sees two wolves that are not part of a pack. They are young, like Wander, and male. When they take down a sheep, they do not honor the life nor the wolf who delivered...
