Summary

In Chapter 37, a group is meeting at a warehouse to discuss the situation. Mark addresses the crowd, saying he is doing so out of respect for Ampai. There is discussion with several people feeling they have to do the march to protect the building of the children's jail and others feeling they have no chance of making actual change. Kla speaks up, saying the march is about more than the jail. He says “We deserve respect, no matter what side of the river we live on. No matter what color orbs swing over our heads” (182). The dockworkers say they stand with Kla. One man points out that Ampai felt a march would not be enough, and that she had some secret that was supposed to tip the balance in their favor.
