Summary

In Chapter 1, Pong and Somkit are at the Namwon Women's Reform Center, known to most as Namwon Prison. (Pong and Somkit are young boys, both born to inmates. Their mothers are dead and by the rules of the prison, both will remain there until their mothers' sentences are up or the boys turn 13.) Pong is extremely observant and both boys are patient. Pong has been carefully watching the mangoes on a tree in the courtyard and positions Somkit so the fruit will fall into his lap. When it does, Somkit catches it but some older girls immediately gear up to fight him for it. Pong hates unfairness. He asks one of the guards for help but he knows that neither the guards nor the adult women inmates will intervene. Somkit has breathing problems and cannot possibly outrun the girls.
