Summary
In “The Orange,” Ophelia worked extra hard because she had to help Berenilde prepare for her part in the Spring Opera. She struggled to stop thinking about Thorn. She attended a funeral of a noble in the Pole. Gail, a mechanic who always wore a monocle, asked her to bring a basket of oranges to Mother Hildegarde. She said that Hildegarde sympathized with people like them because she was from a lower class family herself. Thorn’s grandmother held the basket of oranges when she saw Ophelia struggling with them and a heavy umbrella for Berenilde. When they arrived inside the chapel, Ophelia brought the basket to Mother Hildegarde. Hildegarde took the oranges and gave Ophelia three blue sandglasses. Then, Hildegarde fell unconscious, apparently poisoned by the oranges. Policemen arrested Ophelia.
