Ivonovo

Ivonovo is the town where Sasha grows up. Though it is reasonably large with a hospital, street car, and school, Sasha considers it “provincial.” There are some specific settings described, including the woods near the park where Marik dies. Later, Andrei and Sasha spend a lot of time at the very edge of that park. As a child, Sasha, her mother, and her maternal grandparents live in one side of a duplex. Several other families live in the other half of the house.

Moscow

Sasha and her mother visit Moscow once when Sasha is small, and Sasha returns there to attend the Vakhtangov Drama School at age 17. Sasha lives in a dorm there with two other drama students, Sveta and Lara. For Sasha, Moscow represents the exciting life she hopes to lead as an actress.
