Summary

Act 4 is titled Ivanovo-Leningrad. In Chapter 38, Sasha is back in Ivanovo. She had received a telegram from Grandpa saying Grandma was in the hospital. Sasha was not surprised it was her heart because “What else would it be?” (243). She received the second telegram five days later saying Grandma had died. Sasha was unable to attend the funeral because of commitments to the Theater. She had finished those commitment, wailing out her grief while Vladimir waited patiently. Now, she is back in Ivanovo where “Everything is so much smaller than she remembers” (243). She is also surprised that Grandpa seems less powerful and realizes that Grandma had given him that power so that she could be “gentle and kind and still survive in the heartland of their hearless motherland” (244). Sasha notes the dishes in the kitchen, thinking of the past when Grandma used the cups...
