Summary

In Chapter 33, Galya is furious when Sasha is again drunk. It has been six months since Andrei's visit. The next morning, Galya berates Sasha for her lifestyle and choices. She urges her to find a “normal job,” to consider marriage, and to stop this affair with an older man (Vladimir). This is not a new conversation. Sasha says she is “married to the Theater” (201). She does not try to explain that Vladimir has become a safety net, helping her avoid rants that would get her in trouble if the wrong people heard. She wants to explain that he feels like a father – someone to keep her safe from other men. What she says is “if I'd had a father to protect me all these years … I wouldn't look for older men” (202).
