Point of View
Each chapter alternates point of view between the three main characters (Elias, Helene, and Laia). This provides unique insight into each character because it demonstrates the contrast between how the characters view each other and how they view themselves. For example, Laia views Elias as strong, capable, and determined; being in his presence makes her feel braver and stronger. Conversely, Elias himself is wracked with self-doubt and guilt over his perceived shortcomings. By alternating viewpoints in this way, Tahir adds depth to the portrayal of each character.
The rotating point of view also allows Tahir to cover more narrative ground. A Torch Against the Night is set in a large and complex fantastical world, with an all-consuming war that affects every aspect of the society.
